The students and research assistants of CEFR and other research centers in the university participated in the training program in chemical management, waste management and biosafety organized by the university’s Scientific and Technological Instruments Center (STIC) on 12 June 2019 at Scientific Building 3, Mae Fah Luang University.
A total of 32 trainees from CEFR acquired information that is vital to the operation of the center. The program started with an opening statement from STIC director, Dr. Sian Popluechai. The heads of Researching Support Department and Analytical Instrument Department introduce the safety guidelines and rules in the laboratory. Three major groups were created to divide the participants in the workshop activities in different rooms in the Advance Biology and Biotechnology Laboratory. This is to facilitate learning and easy to handle when it comes to workshop proper.
Three main topics were discussed in the training-workshop, chemical management, waste management and biosafety. For chemical management, basic concepts about chemical hazards including its modes of exposure and effects to our body, and classification and storage of chemicals and hazardous substances were tackled. The importance of Safety Data Sheet was highlighted also. The primary focus of waste management include categories and sources of hazardous wastes in the laboratories with emphasis on waste management of STIC. For biosafety, speakers talked about biohazardous agents and materials, agents assigned risk groups, biosafety levels 1-4 and categories of biohazardous wastes. STIC also discussed important steps for requesting and processing biological materials for research and teaching purposes in the university. Post-test examination and giving of certificates capped off the event.
